Relationships & Sex Education for Special Needs

Our RSE LD/SEN courses have been awarded CPD accredited status through the CPD Accreditation Group.

“Every member of society has the same value as any other human being and the same rights as any other citizen. These rights include the right to sexual expression within the law; the right to an education to help them understand themselves, their sexual development and the choices open to them; and the right to protection from sexual abuse and exploitation.” Living Your Life

DAVID STEWART OBE
Headteacher at Oak Field School, Nottingham

“This is not an area of choice for schools; it is one of absolute duty. Schools must support some of the most vulnerable children and young people in society and help them to have happy, safe and fulfilled lives.”

David Stewart's school has been endorsed by Ofsted as a site of best practice in delivering Relationships & Sex Education to young people with learning difficulties. I am proud and honoured that David has written the foreword to my book 'Providing Relationships & Sex Education for Special Learners'.  It was published by Routledge in 2021 as part of the NASEN Spotlight series.

An indispensable resource for practitioners working with special learners

" What a refreshing book! I have until now searched in vain for guidance on what RSE may mean, include and look like for those who are profoundly or severely learning disabled. My school has not ignored this topic, but for so long we have had no touchstone by which to evaluate our provision, which given RSE curriculum developments will become pressing. Bray places entitlement to RSE firmly within a human rights framework, with the aspiration that learners achieve their greatest capacity possible to take charge of their body and relationships (realistically recognising that such capacity will depend on the individual). The clarion call is that to be fully human is to be an embodied being with all that that entails, including sexuality, and if we are truly to respect and enable the humanity of children and young people who have learning disabilities high quality RSE must be a priority. If that means confronting our own squeamishness around their bodies and sexuality, that is what we must do. The book ranges widely, tackling RSE for the broad spectrum of learning disabilities (not just moderately disabled verbal learners, as most special needs RSE material does - again I say, "At last!") and is thorough in coverage - looking at theory, policy, content (from body awareness, through friendship, puberty, sex, consent etc), methodology (including specific groups of learners, sensory approaches), involving parents and how an RSE curriculum improvement programme may be organised and future proofed within a school. Substantive content which is thorough and thought provoking, and Bray's encouragement which is critical but always positive and enhancing. Unquestionably five stars, irrespective of any stylistic reservations! An excellent book which will enhance practice in any educational setting, but surely will become an indispensable resource for special schools and centres everywhere".
